There were more than 5,700 mentions of cocaine in drug-related Emergency Department Visits. In 2004 in 18 Atlanta-area hospitals, and there were 42 accidental deaths in Fulton County alone caused by cocaine. Cocaine, particularly crack, represents the principal drug threat to Georgia. Powder cocaine is often abused in Georgia raves, nightclubs, and bars. Some area crack users dissolve the drug and then inject it. These users are typically either current or former heroin abusers. Wholesale crack distributors in Georgia sometimes sell “cookies,” crack formed into patties that measure approximately 3” in diameter.

Georgia’s heroin threat is typically limited to Atlanta and other large cities.

Marijuana is the most widely available illicit drug in Georgia. Most of the marijuana found in the state is produced in Mexico, although marijuana produced in Colombia, Jamaica, within the state, and from surrounding states is also available. Nearly 42% of Atlanta adult male arrestees tested positive for marijuana at arrest in 2003. Additional Atlanta arrestee data for 2003 indicate that 50% of adult male arrestees reported using marijuana within the past year. Among the male arrestees reporting past year marijuana use, the average number of days the substance was used in the past month was over ten.

Methamphetamine poses an increasing threat to Georgia, especially in the northern and central areas. It has emerged as the primary drug threat in parts of northern Georgia.

Club Drugs - MDMA, LSD, ketamine, and GHB pose an increasing threat to Georgia. Middle class suburban teenagers and young adults typically abuse club drugs.

Prescription drugs - During 2002, OxyContin was the most frequently abused diverted pharmaceutical in Georgia. Hydrocodone, hydromorphone, and benzodiazepines are also diverted in Georgia, but to a lesser extent.
